Congressional Democrats give up, Americans win on Offshore Drilling

U.S. Congressman Phil Gingrey today made the following statement as press reports indicated that congressional democrats will not seek to renew the ban on energy exploration on our nation’s Outer Continental Shelf. The congressional ban on offshore exploration is set to expire on October 1, 2008.
“All summer long – and for much of the past year – House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and the Democratic Leadership have ignored the will of the American people and prevented a vote on meaningful legislation to decrease our dependence on foreign oil,” said Gingrey. “When Speaker Pelosi gaveled Congress to a five week recess, public outcry only grew louder as House Republicans called our Democrat counterparts back to work in Washington. Finally, it appears that House Democrats have relented and will not try to extend this ban on exploring our nation’s deepwater resources. Thanks to the support of millions of pro-energy Americans, October 1st will be a historic day for the future of American energy independence.”
“However, this is only the first step toward declaring American energy independence. We must ensure that environmental extremists are never allowed to reinstate the drilling moratorium while we continue to push for an “all-of-the-above” energy plan. This plan should focus on increasing domestic oil exploration, while at the same time harnessing renewable and alternative energy technologies and improving conservation and efficiency.”
“It only took Speaker Pelosi and the leadership in Congress six months to listen to the will of Americans throughout the country – no wonder Congress has a 13% approval rating.”
