Gingrey votes against Wall Street bailout
10/3/2008
U.S. Congressman Phil Gingrey made the following statement after voting in opposition to the $700 billion dollar Wall Street bailout proposal which has been signed into law.
“Without question, our nation – as well as the rest of the world – is facing some of the most difficult economic challenges this generation has ever seen. Inaction is definitely NOT an option; however, I do not believe the legislation passed today is the best answer to our economic turmoil. Instead, I supported a more free-market based plan that could provide market liquidity and restore confidence in our economy with far less risk to the taxpayer. I believe that Congress could have created a premium-based insurance program for mortgage-backed securities where the businesses participating—and not the taxpayer—would pay the premiums. I also support suspending the capital gains tax for two years to spur economic growth and investment here in America.”
“I am also very concerned that this legislation does more to treat the symptoms rather than address the underlying disease that caused this financial crisis. We must ensure that when these troubled institutions get back on their feet, they are not allowed to implement the same irresponsible practices that caused this mess. The work of this Congress is not finished, we must comeback and demand more accountability from Washington and from Wall Street to ensure that this never happens again.”
