Gingrey Signs Responsible Health Care Reform Pledge
7/10/2009
On July 10, 2009, Congressman Phil Gingrey pledged not to support any health reform legislation that he has not read, and that the American public has not had a chance to read. The health reform legislation being advanced by the Democratic Majority, H.R. 3200, is over 1,000 pages, yet not a single Democrat has pledged to read the text prior to voting on the bill.
A copy of the pledge follows below:
I, Congressman Phil Gingrey, pledge to my constituents and to the American people that I will not vote to enact any health care reform package that:
1) I have not read, personally, in its entirety; and
2) Has not been available, in its entirety, to the American people on the Internet for at least 72 hours, so that they can read it too.
"When asked whether they have taken the time to read H.R. 3200, several Democrats have reacted as if this would be an inconvenient exercise," said Gingrey. "After reading H.R. 3200, I voted against it when it came before the House Energy and Commerce Committee. Simply put, I will not support any legislation that leads to a government takeover of our health care system."
