Gingrey Fights Against Democrats' Efforts to Censor Conservative Radio
The American Civil Rights Union announced on July 30, 2009 that Congressman Gingrey has signed the Freedom to Listen Pledge. The Pledge indicates the Congressman's opposition to the reinstatement of the Fairness Doctrine, which was abolished by the FCC in 1987.
The pledge follows below:
I, Congressman Phil Gingrey, pledge to the citizens of the 11th District of the State of Georgia and to the American people that, in accordance with our Constitutional guarantee of freedom of speech in the First Amendment:
I will oppose any and all efforts to censor or in any way restrict the people's freedom to listen to the unfettered airing of political views of their choice on broadcast media or the Internet.
Despite that the liberal leaning news sources overwhelm conservative ones, Nancy Pelosi and other Congressional Democrats have indicated their support for reimplementing the so-called Fairness Doctrine, which would allow the government to censor the content of talk-radio programming.
"The Fairness Doctrine was abolished for a reason," said Congressman Gingrey. "Conservative journalists should not be muted simply because they disagree with the Democratic Majority's big government agenda. I will continue fighting the attacks against the freedom of speech being waged by Speaker Pelosi and her liberal cronies."
